Nikkatsu is recognised as Japan’s oldest film studio, founded in 1912 when four smaller production companies merged, and remains active today. During the 1970s, the studio became known for a distinctive line of adult-oriented films that combined provocative themes, romance, drama, and stylized filmmaking.
