Tom Courtenay delivers a star-making performance as William Terrence Fisher, known as Billy Liar, in one of the most memorable and acclaimed British films of the 1960s.

Trapped by an unsympathetic working-class family, two demanding fiancées, and a dull job at an undertaker’s, Billy escapes into a Walter Mitty-like fantasy world where he can live out his grand ambitions. But as work and family pressures become unbearable, Liz, played by a young and charismatic Julie Christie, enters his life and offers him what may be his only real chance to leave the past behind.

Scripted by Keith Waterhouse from his own novel and sensitively directed by John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy), Billy Liar is one of the rare comedies of the British New Wave, blending sharp visual and verbal wit with a poignant reflection on the futility of dreams.
