SYNOPSIS

Between 1950 and 1989, the East German studio DEFA produced a vast collection of Märchenfilme—cinematic adaptations of classic fairy tales and folklore. Ranging from macabre and eerie to whimsical and heartwarming, these visually striking films draw from the works of authors such as Wilhelm Hauff, Hans Christian Andersen, and most notably, the Brothers Grimm.

Among the most celebrated—and darkest—entries in this tradition are:

  • The Devil from Mill Mountain
  • The Singing Ringing Tree
  • Rumpelstiltskin
  • Little Red Riding Hood
  • The Devil’s Three Golden Hairs

In The Devil from Mill Mountain, a greedy miller angers forest spirits after disguising himself as a demon to destroy a rival.
In The Singing Ringing Tree, a prince embarks on a perilous quest to win the love of a cold-hearted princess—or risk a cursed transformation.
Rumpelstiltskin follows a young woman forced into a dangerous pact after her father’s reckless boast.
In Little Red Riding Hood, the titular heroine journeys through the forest, aided by unlikely allies as she evades cunning predators.
Finally, The Devil’s Three Golden Hairs tells of a young man tasked with venturing into hell itself to retrieve a prize from the Devil.

A cornerstone of East German cinema, DEFA’s Märchenfilme remained hugely popular throughout the existence of the German Democratic Republic, yet remain largely unseen outside the former Eastern Bloc. Blending haunting imagery with subtle social themes, these films stand as both culturally significant works and highly entertaining pieces of European genre cinema.

The Masters of Cinema Series proudly presents all five films together for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK.
