After his daughter (Susan Sarandon, in her first screen role) overdoses on heroin, wealthy New York businessman Bill Compton (Dennis Patrick) confronts her drug-dealer boyfriend in a rage and accidentally kills him.
Shaken, Bill retreats to a nearby bar, where he confesses the crime to a stranger: Joe (Peter Boyle), a charismatic but deeply bigoted blue-collar factory worker. When Joe realizes Bill is telling the truth, he begins inserting himself into Bill’s life.
Despite their very different backgrounds, the two men develop an uneasy bond through their shared fear and resentment of the counterculture—a relationship that ultimately leads to devastating consequences.
Directed by John G. Avildsen (Rocky) from a screenplay by Norman Wexler (Saturday Night Fever, Serpico), Joe is a darkly satirical portrait of the cultural divisions, anger, and violence simmering beneath American society at the beginning of the 1970s.
