SYNOPSIS
Produced by Amicus Productions and released by American International Pictures, Madhouse unites two icons of horror — Vincent Price (House on Haunted Hill) and Peter Cushing (Dr Terror’s House of Horrors) — in a film that turns the lens on the genre itself.
Paul Toombes (Price) is an actor best known for portraying the sinister Dr. Death, a skull-faced killer featured in a long-running horror series. When his fiancée Ellen is murdered under mysterious circumstances by someone dressed as Dr. Death, Toombes begins to question his own sanity.
Years later, as he returns to the role for a new television series, a string of murders begins to unfold on set — once again mirroring his infamous character and forcing him to confront whether fiction has bled into reality.
Best known as an editor on films such as Marathon Man, The Killing Fields, and The Mission, director Jim Clark delivers one of his most distinctive works with Madhouse — a self-aware and atmospheric horror film that bridges classic gothic storytelling with the darker edge of 1970s genre cinema.
