This 2-disc Special Edition presents a powerful double-feature from acclaimed Japanese director Chūsei Sone, exploring the volatile world of youth gangs, drugs, sex, and violence in 1980s Japan.
Scars of the Sun (1981)
Departing from the Roman Porno films that helped define much of his earlier career, Sone delivers a gritty youth drama starring Kenichi Kaneda. The film follows Shuhei, a member of a rebellious street gang whose fragile sense of loyalty and tradition begins to unravel after reconnecting with his estranged brother. As new relationships and internal tensions emerge, the gang’s violent lifestyle spirals toward emotional and social collapse.
Blow the Night! (1983)
Produced through Sone’s own company, Filmworkers, this raw docu-drama is based on the real experiences of Namie Takada, a 15-year-old gang member struggling with addiction and delinquency. Starring as herself, Takada brings a shocking level of authenticity to this harsh portrait of disaffected youth and urban decay in early-1980s Japan.
Together, these two films offer a bleak, emotionally charged snapshot of rebellious youth culture during one of Japan’s most turbulent cinematic eras.
