Seeking to revitalise the ailing Chinese fantasy genre, legendary producer Tsui Hark assembled an exceptional creative team: A Better Tomorrow II action director Ching Siu-Tung, Peking Opera Blues screenwriter Yuen Kai-Chi, and superstars Leslie Cheung, Joey Wong and Wu Ma.
The result was the action-comedy classic A Chinese Ghost Story, which conquered the Hong Kong box office in 1987, spawned two sequels and cemented Tsui Hark’s reputation as one of Hong Kong cinema’s most respected producers.
A Chinese Ghost Story
The timid yet earnest Ling Choi-San, played by Leslie Cheung, takes shelter for the night in an abandoned temple. There, he meets and falls in love with the beautiful Nip Siu-Sihn, played by Joey Wong.
Ling soon discovers that she is a ghost forced to lure men to their deaths by an evil tree demon. To free her from its grasp, he enlists the help of the rambunctious Taoist warrior Yin Chik-Ha, played by Wu Ma.
A Chinese Ghost Story II
Ling Choi-San is recruited to help a group of rebels battle supernatural forces and rescue their captured leader.
He is once again aided by Yin Chik-Ha, along with the formidable and slightly unhinged swordsman Jihau, played by Jacky Cheung of Bullet in the Head.
A Chinese Ghost Story III
Set 100 years after the events of the previous film, the final instalment introduces Fong, played by Tony Leung Chiu-Wai of Hard Boiled.
A bumbling monk apprentice tasked with transporting a golden statue of Buddha to a neighbouring county, Fong accidentally stumbles into the lair of the original film’s tree demon and its ghostly underlings.
Featuring spectacular special effects, breathtaking fight choreography and lavish cinematography, The Chinese Ghost Story Trilogy represents Hong Kong cinema at its most inventive. The films deliver a singular blend of supernatural horror, thrilling action, offbeat comedy and poignant romance.
