The General (1926) – Masters of Cinema Series (4K UHD)

Region: A / B / C
Runtime: 79 minutes
Language: Silent (English intertitles)
Aspect Ratio: 1.37:1

Buster Keaton, widely regarded as one of the greatest comedians of the silent film era, reached the height of his creative powers with The General. Co-directed, co-written, co-produced, and starring Keaton himself, the film remains one of the most celebrated comedies ever made and showcases some of the finest slapstick sequences in cinema history.

Keaton plays Johnnie Gray, a Western & Atlantic Railroad train engineer whose two greatest loves are his sweetheart Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack) and his prized locomotive, The General. When the American Civil War begins, Johnnie attempts to enlist in the Confederate Army but is rejected, which disappoints Annabelle and strains their relationship.

His chance to prove himself arrives when Union spies steal his beloved locomotive—and unknowingly kidnap Annabelle in the process. Determined to rescue both the woman he loves and his treasured train, Johnnie pursues the thieves deep into enemy territory in one of the most exhilarating chase sequences ever filmed.

A landmark of silent-era filmmaking, The General remains one of the defining works of early cinema, standing alongside classics such as Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights, **Harold Lloyd’s Safety Last! **, and Keaton’s own ** Sherlock Jr. **.

The Masters of Cinema Series proudly presents The General on 4K UHD for the first time in the UK.
