Synopsis
A young man, Józef (Jan Nowicki), travels deep into the countryside to visit his dying father, who resides in a mysterious sanatorium. Upon arrival, he discovers a decaying, dreamlike institution where patients roam freely and time behaves in strange, non-linear ways.
A doctor reveals that his father exists in a state between life and death, setting Józef on a surreal, hypnotic journey through the hospital—and his own subconscious. Each room opens into a new, hallucinatory world filled with unsettling imagery and shifting realities.
Directed by visionary filmmaker Wojciech Has and adapted from the works of Bruno Schulz, The Hourglass Sanatorium is widely regarded as one of the greatest Polish films ever made. Smuggled out of Poland to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival—where it won the Jury Prize—the film has since become a landmark of surrealist cinema, influencing generations of arthouse and fantasy filmmakers.
