Marlon Brando delivers a commanding and deeply unsettling performance in this haunting entry from the golden era of British horror. Directed by Michael Winner, The Nightcomers serves as a provocative prelude to Henry James’ Gothic classic The Turn of the Screw, exploring the shadowy events that precede the famed novella.
Brando stars as Peter Quint, the brooding and manipulative servant whose magnetic presence casts a dark influence over a secluded country estate. After the tragic death of their parents, young Flora and Miles are placed under the guardianship of the reserved governess Miss Jessel and the steadfast housekeeper Mrs. Grose. Yet it is Quint who truly dominates the household, exerting a disturbing psychological hold over both the children and Miss Jessel. Drawn into a secret and destructive liaison with Quint, Miss Jessel becomes entangled in a relationship that accelerates the estate’s descent into moral decay—while Flora and Miles increasingly fall under Quint’s spell.
Moody, provocative, and visually striking, The Nightcomers offers a bold reimagining of James’ haunting world, anchored by one of Brando’s most intense late-career performances.
